Woven Wool

A friend gave me a bag full of woven wool fabric leftover from other sewing projects. Most of the pieces are small, but there is a nice variety of colors, plaids and tweeds. Just right for me to combine with some felted sweater wool and repurpose into some pretty zip pouches.
You can take a look here in my Etsy shop.

Plush Blooming Catus

I finally found some small clay pots in just the right sizes to finish up a collection of plush cactus. I have a whimsical prickly pear cactus, a San Pedro cactus, and a barrel cactus all made from repurposed sweater wool in varying shades of green. I've added some not so prickly "spines" made from thread and beads. And I couldn't resist adding some small blooms to each one.
These make great gifts for anyone lacking a "green thumb", and are fun home or office décor, alone or in a grouping. I have a group of them on my coffee table right now!

They are all available in my Etsy shop right now.

Discoveries - Favorite Midwest Finds

Thank you to Midwest Living magazine for including some of my FeltSewGood wool flower brooches in the March/April 2011 issue. What a great Spring issue full of gardening tips, delicious recipes and retro road trips!

And a tribute to peonies, my favorite flower and inspiration for many of my flower brooches.

My flower brooches are part of the Discoveries page, along with five other lovely giftable items, all made from vintage or recycled materials.
Thank you Midwest Living for helping to support HandMade!

New Craft Supplies

My husband and I went to a neighborhood garage sale Saturday morning. I like it when entire neighborhoods sponsor a garage sale event - lots to look at in a short amount of time, without driving all over town! I scored some pretty nice craft supplies.

I found a couple of 100% wool sweaters, in good shape, for just one dollar each. I will use those for felting. I picked up a big jar full and a zip-lock bag each full of vintage buttons. And a nice, soft vintage suede jacket that I will also use for crafting.

These buttons and other vintage sewing notions will come in handy for all sort of brooches and handbags.

The best part is that finding some new supplies inspired me to reorganize my craft closet. The felted sweaters, and my other fabrics, are all folded neatly so that I can see everything at a glance. The drawers are full of zippers, beads, embroidery floss and interfacing. If only it would stay that way!

New Felted Goodness!

I've been sewing the past few days and I've added some new items to my shop.

A pretty red patterned Bella style handbag,

a green leaf felted wool zippered pouch,

and some pretty beaded rose brooches.
I'm planning to create some new plush animals next - a few of my horses, a few more cats and I'm working on a goldfish/koi - so look for those coming next week! I plan to have some available in the shop.
And speaking of cats, I've been making my furry friends some new toys with some of my scraps of wool and a little catnip. I'll take some pictures and have a tutorial for you on Monday, 5/4. Can you beleive it's May already?
Have a great weekend!

Read This, Feel Smarter

Check out these websites. . . they're fun and informative:

As a companion to Mental Floss magazine, "Where Knowledge Junkies Get Their Fix", mentalfloss.com/blogs provides all sorts of random and interesting information. The site includes trivia, quizzes and "amazing facts". You'll find plenty of conversation starters for you next cocktail party!

Another interesting site is campaignearth.org. You can read about the campaign, learn more about green energy and sign up for the monthly challenges. The challenges all offer simple ways to gradually green your life. . . things like drying your clothes outside on a sunny day, buying local produce and ways to lessen your junk mail. Each challenge shows you the average CO2 savings rate. You can even get the whole family involved with the challenges!
